Reading guide

Om Devakinandanaya vidmahe; Vasudevaya dhimahi; tanno Krishnah prachodayat.

Meaning

The opening phrase contemplates Devakinandana, Krishna as the son of Devaki. The next meditates upon Vasudeva, a sacred name associated with Krishna. The concluding prayer asks Krishna to inspire and illuminate our understanding. The mantra therefore joins remembrance, meditation and a prayer for spiritual discernment. Its Gayatri-style movement leads the devotee from knowing the divine form, through contemplation, toward an invitation for divine guidance.
